Updated: Mar 27, 2021

Overview

- This book are the writings and speeches of the great Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Pan Africanist who’s teaching gave birth to new fearless black ideas, promoted black entrepreneurship and black solidarity to reach our return to Africa. “Be black, buy black think black and all else will take care of itself” was the motto Marcus promoted and lived by. Arguments with W.E.B Dubois and the NAACP mark significant debate within black culture and community which promulgates today. Is it possible to integrate? And if so how should it look? Marcus Garvey pushed Pan Africanist and getting black people a place for ourselves. This was the freedom Marcus Garvey preached.

Theme

- “Be black, buy black think black and all else will take care of itself” Is the theme of life for Marcus Garvey. He pushed the black agenda further than any black leader ever had and had more success for his efforts than anyone else outside of Elijah Muhammad. This doctrine became his rallying cry!

Biggest takeaway

- The spat between W.E.B Dubois and Marcus Garvey delved into to name calling and with Garvey calling Dubois a “house negro” and “uncle Tom” and Dubois referring to Garvey as “ugly” and a “gorilla”. This issue between the two men is still important to black life. Dubois leadership with the NAACP put a throne in the side of Garvey who saw the organization as a slow-moving way to progress which could restrict it. NAACP had many whites working alongside them at this time (for obvious reasons) but Garvey thought having those whites in those positions would hurt blacks long term. Which leads to a debate we have now is integration worth it and how should it look, or should blacks just go their own way with what they have.

Overall Satisfaction

- 9.2/10 Great Read, Very insightful,

Comments on the Author

- Marcus Garvey was a pioneer in pan African teaching a great leader and a great voice for black people. He pioneered the back to Africa movement and gave voice to a desolate people and strength to people whom were weak. He is the most accomplished black rights leader accomplishing most of what he wanted to. He built ships and organized a movement. And was shining light and fore bringer of what Elijah Muhammad built and instilled with the Nation of Islam.
