Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri

Writer: Cameron ShabazzCameron Shabazz

Overview - One of the best-written works I have ever read. The detailing of Hell is so vivid in this writing that it is used for all references to the fiery dungeon of God's adversary. Every circle of Hell is detailed with imaginative horror. Imaginative as it is, some say the visions of Hell are so vivid and intense they speculate if Dante actually descended to Hell. And this poem is a retelling of his experience with his guide Virgil. This is one of my most favorite works; I revisit it often. For the destination of the saved is not the pits of Hell. To only visit such a place in words is so much better than a sinful fiery reality in the pit of the deepest despair for all its occupants.

Theme – The theme of this writing may be straightforward or it may be deeper, but I have not derived the meaning as of yet. Descending into Hell and depicting the circles therein.

Main point – As Virgil was guided through the circles of hell, he arrived at the circle for heresy, where philosophers, writers, and poets are confined because they do not prioritize God in their philosophy or art.

Overall Satisfaction - 10/10. Great read. One of the most read and well-known works of all time.

Comments on the Author – I don’t know much about Dante Alighieri, but his effort and detail in this work make it last forever. I have not read his book on purgatory or heaven, but I will in the future.
