Phaedrus by Plato

Updated: Jul 18, 2021

Overview – This is a dialogue written by Plato about love. There so much in this I had to research some of the information to ensure I was on the right track in my understanding. Similar to how some of Shakespeare’s writing are very dense and sometimes knowing what Shakespeare is saying can become convoluted. In this dialogue was some thoughts and issues arised as to the meaning of the writing. In this dialogue the key points are love but also shares on rhetoric and metaphysics. The discussion is about the art of rhetoric many times in the dialogue Phaedrus says something and enamored the speech and feeling of the words Socrates stops and points out how well Phaedrus articulated his points. This was a very enjoyable read it gave me a lot to think about not so much about love but definitely in terms of arguments and how they are formulated, speeches and when someone “catches the ghost” in articulation and how this can be the most persuasive point of the speech. Some of Socrates writings are so important they embody how the educational system seeks to teach students. This dialogue pushes the idea of the importance of speech and rhetoric using the right words when speaking.

Theme – Love, rhetoric, and passion in speaking

Biggest takeaway – Though I believe the best and most important parts of this dialogue are ones which touch on rhetoric and speeches the part which sticks out to me most is the one about love where love was a soaring flying being which lost its wings and comes to earth and searches for love from various forms which can lead to the flight of the being again. I always thought that was true and beautiful.

Overall Satisfaction – 9/10 – Great read it is very stable for studying love, rhetoric, and ideas

Comments on the Author – Plato is one of the most important philosophers to know and to study because of how powerful each one of his writings are. Plato gives so much weight to each sentence Socrates says because he is bringing to life the dialogue through the eyes of Socrates each thought, and idea given hold weight.
