Overview – This title is presented like a sermon to white America asking and imploring them for empathy and moral aptitude for racial injustice blacks face in America. This book was released around the time when Trayvon Martin was murdered and when Sandra Bland was killed while in police custody. Timely for a message like this to be given to white America while Black Lives Matter was on the streets letting a country know its black citizens were not to be thrown under the rug and forgot about like had in the past. This book was a great read with a message that is timely for all ages for blacks living in America.
Theme – Have a heart and have empathy for black people in America.
Biggest takeaway – Michael Eric Dyson a renowned scholar and professor at Georgetown University was pulled over with his wife and young daughter in the car. The cop falsely assumed Dr. Dyson was involved in a robbery, he was pulled over, the cop proceeded to question him repeatedly with Dr. Dyson saying he was a professor and tried to give his credentials. The cop relented and asked for the Doctor to step out of the car. Eventually the cop departed, and Dyson was able to drive to back to his home with his kids still rattled. This event shows how no matter how high you elevate in American society one can still be harassed for being black even with their kids being present. A disgusting display which is far too common in our society.
Overall Satisfaction 9.0/10 – Outstanding writing, storytelling along with providing a historical perspective. Highly recommended.
Comments on the Author – Michael Eric Dyson is one of the premier voices on black life, black intellectual thought, and black culture. When an unarmed black man is killed by the police Michael Dyson is there to speak on the situation, when a black athlete protests its Dr. Dyson, they call for perspective on the issue, when black people are not being treated fairly in business or tech Dr. Dyson is there to give insight on how to fix the problem. I love the way this man speaks much truth and understanding while mixing it with hip hop. Jay Z bars bring animation to his articulation of points which seep down to the root of a problem or issue. Biggie lyrics add layering to the struggle and trouble life blacks leads and give hope for prosperity when “birthdays were the worst days, now we sip champagne when we thirsty!”. So much of black culture rests on Dr. Dyson shoulders to articulate to the white world, so there was no better author to bring a sermon for white American to listen. As with most freedom fighters the roots of Dr. Dyson’s articulation are love. Love for black people who have been overlooked and disenfranchised, love for the poor white who has been lied to and told fabrications to breed hate for black people who are not their enemy and love for all minorities who fight to be seen as equal in this country. Dr. Dyson epitomizes black excellence in every writing, television appearance and lecture and this book is no different.
