Overview – This book delves into the idea of schooling for black people in America and how the current system of schools does not support the proper educational upbringing of black children. The central claim here being the descendants of slaves have not only been taught wrong in formal school, but also the formal schools in the US have no compacity to teach the black child because the history black people went through in dealing with white people. From slavery to Jim Crow the dominant white society has looked to stamp out the light in the mind of the black boy and girl. Thusly the institutions of schools cannot and should not teach black children, teens, or adults. Home schooling along with schools tailored for black education are the essential conclusions of this writing. The premises are broad, but the conclusion clear the black boy and girl need their own schools.
Theme - The black boy and girl need their own schools to be taught in how to be leaders, scholars, and well-rounded people with the consciousness for the community.
Biggest takeaway – In reading this title the author makes a clear claim on why it is imperative for black children to be educated apart from the system which currently administers their education. The black boy and girl are subject to inferior schooling due to the history of racism and overall prejudices of the country we are forced to inhabit. The truth and conclusion to this rather took me by surprise because I thought with such measured wording and wide notoriety for this book, I fathomed the conclusion would be less radical, less direct and more persuasive instead it is a stern look into the truths of blacks in schooling with a clear conclusion not up for debate by the author. I was mistaken to think the words would be measured and happily so. In truth the conclusion was clearly laid out and made with measurement and poise and I believe in this schools should try less to diversify and rather put teachers who are black to black schools to teach black children.
