The Shining By Stephen King

Writer: Cameron ShabazzCameron Shabazz

Overview – This is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. Consistently on my mind rethinking of the scenes and the meaning of them. Trying to understand why such a book struck me in the way it did led me to trying to unravel the mysterious antagonist of the hotel. The movie, though not much like the book, is just as haunting. This is a book I would read repeatedly searching for meaning and how each page lends to the horror of the next. When Danny shines with Dick Hallorann for the first time it seemed like something awfully familiar to me. I think we all shine in some way especially with the people we feel most connected to. But when Danny shined to Dick some miles away with haunting images of what was going on in the hotel that was not so familiar. The supernatural nature of the hotel as well as Danny’s ability to talk to his older self really makes this book entirely interesting. I think of this title as a giant among horror novels and can attest to it being one of my favorite books in my collection. I will highly recommend this to any one if they dare to enter the Overlook Hotel.

Theme – Jealousy, insanity and addiction can destroy a family.

Biggest takeaway – Most of the scenes of this book are very vivid to me but the two I remember most are when Danny and his mom were hiding from Jack and Wendy was instructing Danny on some things to do to get out of the hotel. By this time Wendy had not seen the supernatural things in the hotel Danny saw. Wendy while explaining to Danny what to do heard a loud pop under the door she could see some confetti on the ground, looking out the door Wendy could see a party had erupted out of the blue. There was a man in a dog costume barking and the party was in full swing from nothing or no one else in the hotel but the family to a full party in a split second. Very unsettling. The other part of story which sticks out to me is when Danny is running from his father and his father is chasing him with a mallet. Jack corners Danny and Danny pleads with his father not to kill him. Jack then took the mallet and starts bashing in his own face leaving it grotesquely disfigured, bloody, and broken. Jack then says “your daddy is gone” thus sealing the fate of Jack and having the demon fully taking over his body.

Overall Satisfaction – 9.9/10 Great read, this book is a classic
