Overview- This is one of the best plays I have ever read for its depth, character development, and the way it addresses topics on life, death, melancholy, and longing. The depth of the play seeps through every act. The relationship between the three sisters outlines itself in their communication each sister’s tone and response elucidate the characters and bring a life to the play that is odd and strange but very revealing. The three sisters live in Russia with their brother. The townspeople are boring in comparison to their educated lives of culture and means which they wish to return to. They obsess over moving back to the big city continuously bringing it up. These sisters reflect on the melancholy of life and what happens when people long for moments which will never happen constantly living in the future or the past.
Theme- In this play there are a lot of themes but mainly feelings of isolation and dissatisfaction in the face of trying to find meaning in life.
Biggest takeaway- In the beginning of the play one of sisters is walking down the stairs and another sister questions her on why she is always wearing black the sister replies she is mourning herself. This statement emphasizes the vibe of the sisters and the overall feeling of the play. Constantly trying to find meaning in life before death while these sisters sit thinking about what is not.
Overall Satisfaction- 10/10 – One of my favorite plays of all time
Comments on the Author- Anton Chekhov is revered as one of the best playwrights of all time for his realism and the writing style he uses to uncover the truths of life. He takes a very realistic approach to unsettle the reader. A play is written where a set of ideas interact to uncover the truths of those ideas; each character embodies the idea, and the idea plays itself out from Act to Act. Usually with most plays by Act 4 the idea is full grown which leads to a summary or monologue or soliloquy performed by the character. This is at least a paragraph for most playwrights but for Chekhov one sentence or one word or even one action by the character can encapsulate the full idea in the final Act. This bears witness to his amazing ability as a playwright.
